Volunteer
Do you value food grown locally and in ways that nurture the long-term
health of our community and environment? The Nanaimo Community Gardens Society is working with our community to get more food grown locally and sustainably. Our programs teach people skills to grow food, and link people with the resources to grow, share, sell and buy local food.
Would you like to dig in the dirt or pick fruit with a strong community of friends? We enjoy a strong sense of community and tangible achievement as we garden together. No experience necessary! All are welcome to volunteer in our Community Gardens and Gleaning programs.
To volunteer, join as a member by returning a filled out membership form here or at a Wednesday Work Party at either of our two sites (see events calendar).
Would you like to contribute your time and talents towards our vision? We are currently looking for directors to serve on our board. Consider serving on one of our site committees, or sitting in on our monthly board meetings to check us out. Call us at (250) 816-GROW. (A description of each committee is found below).
SERVE ON A COMMITTEE:
Pine St Community Garden Committee, or "Pine Nuts": This site committee involves Gardens volunteers in the planning and maintenance of the NCGS communal community garden located behind the Foodshare Centre at 271 Pine St. All are welcome at our meetings and Wednesday work parties.
Chair: Terra Bohart
Hammond Bay Greenhouse Committee:
This site committee is focused on the planning and maintenance of NCGS's Hammond Bay Greenhouse.
Greenhouse volunteers grow an extensive communal container garden in the large greenhouse bays, sharing
the work and the community of gardening together. From February through July, these Greenhouse
volunteers lead the seeding, transplanting and nurturing of the heritage plants NCGS sells to
support our programs and increase food production in our community. The educational, hands on
experience of greenhouse production is a great chance to expand your skills and knowledge of
starting plants indoors from seed, natural growing methods and self sustainability.
